Firstly let me start by saying that the small solar panels are less efficient and have lesser capacity so therefore the application diminishes with their size. Having said that small is relative to whatever you are doing, small to some may be large to others.

The technology is heading in the direction of smaller but more efficient cells and it can be likened to the advancement of the cell phone from the brick remembered amusingly in the 70s to the compact, lightweight version of today.

The parts you would need to build your own solar panels are available at most electronics stores, and this is an interesting project to undertake if you wish to learn about this technology. But if you have a particular application that requires a more advanced setup it would be better if you bought something from a supplier.

Some solar power systems can cost you a lot of money, but if you are a handy person and can understand some basic technical data there is no reason why you could not undertake a small to midsized project around your home. It is possible that you could construct enough solar panel to supply the power necessary to run some small appliances around the home or toolshed. This only depends on how far you want to go and how much you are willing to spend.

There are many instruction books and guides widely available in shops and libraries and that is where I recommend you start, read about how much work or technically how difficult it may be before you start and you will at least know what you're up for before you outlay any time or money.
